were there non-European popes 1000 years ago

I don't know off the top of my head, but there might well have been Greek or Egyptian popes waay back before the Roman Empire split in two.

Contrary to popular belief, priests do not generally take a vow of poverty, unless they belong to an order that requires it.

But the Jesuits do, which is amusing in light of how well the Jesuits who educated my brother live.

According to that bastion of Catholic knowledge, The Exorcist, the Jesuits also drink a lot.

Greeks aren't European?

I guess they are, I just tend to think of Greece as more mid-East than Europe. Huh. The brain is a weird thing.

This has also been my experience. Jesuits roll deep.

Our wings are not tired

I just hope he did not collaborate with the Argentinian government when they were disappearing people.

He was the Jesuit Provicial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979 which is during the period of the Dirty war and has, in fact, been accuses of collaborating.

New pope is a grumpy cat

Better a grumpy cat than Emperor Palpatine.
