I must say that muffs strike me as an extremely inefficient means of keeping your hands warm--they're only useful if you're not doing anything but walking/standing.
Or riding in a carriage.
I always associate them with carriage rides (yeah, I dunno) so they would work fine for that.

I had a roommate who had some vintage one's and they had pockets in them, so they also acted like a small purse.

I associate muffs with riding in sleighs or sledges. Or ice skating, but I think that's from a specific illustration in a children's book. You'd already be wearing gloves, right? Because ladies always wore gloves?
