You tell me that anyone could do what he does with enough practice.
I don't know. I believe, without any freakin evidence at all to support it, that he has a genetic component or components (talent) mixed with a life of encouragement and discipline, and some plain old chance coming in to play where someone with some power said, "hey, that's cool, let's record him doing that!".
But I have no proof of the genetic component. It's a theory.
Can things be innate without being genetic?
Sure - diet and environment before you are born. Also there is a formal word (Allyson might remember) for stuff that is not directly genetic but a result of other stuff that is.
Michael Jordan can sing?
Like an angel.
I thought we were talking about talent in general, not just talent within artistic spheres.
It doesn't count, because he's lead with four other dudes.
Can things be innate without being genetic?
IDK. I'm unsure what the difference is. I think the problem is that talent is often described as being something supernatural, when it appears to be just natural.
Epigenetic!
I was trying to remember the word yesterday.
Sure, talent is not supernatural. I do agree that is often describe in very mystical or ethereal terms. But I think if we look at it as the genetic component of a skill it becomes more reasonable.
Consuela beat me to "epigenetic". I think "talent" is more than just lots of practice, and opportunity, and interest. You can love music and have piano lessons from age 3 and practice all your life, and you'll be good at it, but it won't make you Mozart.
Are we talking about Person of Interest anywhere?
I had the most fantastic morning, and it even involved a Buffista! I drove out to where Burrell's sister lives, and picked her up, then went out to a really good breakfast place at the airport out there, and had a really good conversation. Then on the way back, we stopped at a beach where people were surfing to see if I could get a photo for the scavenger hunt, and we just totally lucked into the nicest people ever, who thought the whole thing was a hoot. Best of all, they were there to take pictures of Dad surfing with this incredibly fancy lens they had rented, so they took better pictures than I could have, and his wife already emailed them to me.
