Because getting a portrait of one's pet is something of a luxury in this economy, I assume.
Also, I dunno about Tom, but that would be a business that required a lot of applied extroversion to drum up work. One would have to not only like animals, but be good at talking oneself up with random strangers at dog parks and pet stores and dog shows and whatnot.

This, mostly. Plus, I have no idea how much demand there would be for that sort of thing. Also, I would have to learn a whole lot of about studio lighting and shooting, and buy a lot of expensive equipment.

This guy [link] is an Atlanta pet photographer who was selling framed prints at last year's art festival. He had some great Atlanta shots for sale, as well as examples of his pet photography.
