Humans are generally not good at distinguishing correlation from causation.
That's why we had to invent science! Then we had a method to correct for our need for instinctive, "that feels right" half-truths and falsities.

Man, the comments on that article are more infuriating than usual, even by SFGate comment thread standards. Nobody's challenging or even addressing the science; it's just a solid wall of WAH I LOVE MY SUGAR NANNY STATE BOO OBAMA WANTS TO TAX US ALL INTO OBLIVION STARTING WITH MY PRECIOUS, PRECIOUS SUGAR SOCIALISMCAKES.
PRECIOUS SUGAR SOCIALISMCAKES
I fully intend to steal this as the name of the organic bakery I'll be opening in Williamsburg next year.
I for one would be happy to see corn squeezings used strictly for ethanol rather than pumped into every damned canned and boxed food I buy as high fructose corn syrup. Jones Soda is about the only thing I consume that I wouldn't be fine with switching to a sugar substitute like aspertame or Splenda.

As long as you're willing to pay me royalties. Acceptable payment currency includes, and may indeed be strictly limited to, salted caramel cupcakes and cheddar cheese and chive scones.
I would be happy to see corn subsidies disappear entirely, and ethanol and HFCS along with them. Put that money into electric cars instead.
New study out of UCSF contends it's sugar, not obesity causing chronic illness.
I just went to a diabetes awareness event the other day and the leaps of correlation were just breathtaking. I tried to be charitable and think that since Type 2 Diabetes is such an issue in LA and growing so fast, authorities are just trying to get people's attention. But, my word- the fat shaming.
But, my word- the fat shaming.
Oh, god yes.
I went to one, though, that was wonderful. The presenter was diabetic and she was guzzling down diet Coke. Someone said that aspertame (or whatever's in it) was bad for you. The presenter said, "Do you know who funded the study that said it was bad for you? The Sugar Council. And they fed pounds of the stuff to rats. Don't consume pounds of the stuff, and you should be OK."
Of course diet Coke has phosphoric acid, which is doing nasty things to my bones, so I'm screwed anyway.

How can I get to Austin to attend this? Why don't we have an Alamo Drafthouse here?
... to be fair, there are now two separate groups trying to revive the Parkway Theater. Surely one of them will be successful?
