I was also told to steer away from foods I liked/my regular diet because there was a pretty good chance that I would develop bad associations with at least some of the food I was eating during chemo.
I hadn't thought of that angle of things, that they want you to still like your favorite foods when all is said and done.
Jesse, I hear ya. Sometimes when traveling I try to get food I can't at home or go to local awesome restaurants...but half the time I end up at chains because it's easier and I know what I'll get.
May I also recommend the Grand Lux restaurant. It is a little chain restauranty, but the portions are HUGE and whenever I go to Chicago, I feel like I have let go of all of my cash and the GL is decent food and doesn't make me feel like I have to take out a second loan to leave the city.
My cousin once ate a brownie nearly the size of her head at that place! After a full lunch!
Sue, I'd also recommend The Gage on Michigan Avenue, which has the best burgers I've ever tasted and is within walking distance of the Art Institute.
It's also good for a group, including vegetarians, which a lot of restaurants that don't have a magazine-sized menu and platter-sized entrees aren't.
California or Arkansas? (I know the likely answer, but a guy can hope.)
California, where the Mother Ship lives.
seafood of any sort was completely out of the question for me (and consider the source on that one)
Hmm. I think she's still eating seafood, but I will ask my sister how she's doing.
I don't mean to sound like my sister is doing a bad job or anything. Me, I offer to shave my head if my mother's going to lose her hair to chemo. My sister is willing to make all the same dietary choices my mother does in order to make it easier for her to eat. She's 100% point guard in everything cancer-related for my mother.
I think that makes it harder, though. I mean, it's good, it's great, but it's really high stress.

It wouldn't surprise me if she was--it's so completely based on the person. It's much more a what's right or wrong for the person involved than what's right or wrong or typical overall. If anyone else says differently, fuck 'em.
