Unsurprisingly, The Tontine by Thomas Costain is about a tontine. It was one of the books that everyone in the had in the '50s, along with The Keys of the Kingdom by A. J. Cronin, The Robe by Lloyd Douglas Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor and The Foxes of Harrow by Frank Yerby. I eventually read all of my parents' books during periods of desperation when I ran out of something to read.
