You'll heal fine. Just follow their instructions and enjoy the narcotics. (I know, I loathe the gauze feeling too.) And call them if you have questions. They are likely more than used to it and you won't spiral stress.

Got back from GAFilk last night, and have now caught up. Con was good. Much music was heard, many people were hugged, and I bought books and earrings.

I am one big ball of grinding ache and I resent the hell out of it. Plus tomorrow is going to suck. I have to be in early to get a ball rolling, then be there late to wrap things up. With a dentist visit in the middle at the worst possible time (unless there is a cancellation and can squeeze me in earlier.) I made the appt late in the day so I could go home from there. Of course, this stupid installation had to end up landing on that day.

ION, whining: I had emergency dental work today. I cracked a tooth last week, and had it removed today. I've never been through this before, I hate the feeling of the gauze in my mouth, and I'm paranoid I'll do something wrong with the aftercare. WHINING.

Here is my tip for post-tooth-extraction care: if you continue to have a little bleeding past the time point when it "should" be done (or at least "should" be done according to the dentist's cookie-cutter Ideal Patient Prognosis), brew a bag of any kind of black tea, let the bag cool to lukewarm, wring it out, then place it on the newly toothless area, and bite down gently (or hold it with your finger; depending on where the tooth was, biting is easier) and keep it there for a minute or 2. Repeat if necessary.

After I had a tooth pulled (mine cracked, too), I was apparently going to bleed just a tiny bit, FOREVER. The Internets yielded the black tea trick, and it worked a charm.

They didn't give me any, just told me to take some ibuprofen. Hmmph. But I have DO have some Vicodan left, if the ibuprofen doesn't do the trick.

msbelle, if you are up to it after your busy day, can you be bossy to me in about two hours? I have the feeling otherwise I will go home and do nothing, and I would really like to get at least half of the guest room closet cleaned out and packed tonight.

Yup, that's normal. I hadn't stopped after 8-10 hours -- although it was just more of a persistent ooze, not even a trickle -- so that's when I resorted to tea. The tannins in black tea make the capillaries constrict, so the bleeding stops.

For me ibuprofin kicked in faster than the oxycodone my oral surgeon prescribed after wisdom tooth extraction, didn't wear off an hour before I could take the next dose, and didn't give me that dizzy floating feeling. Not sure if it would have been as effective the first couple of days when the pain was worse, though.

Knocking off work a couple hours early and making up the 3-mile hike I was forced to miss out on yesterday has done wonders to improve my mood. Though perhaps not as much as not getting hefty surprise extra bills from the hospital and dentist would have.
