Cash, just to put a positive spin on last minute meetings, I got a request late yesterday for a meeting with my boss at 9 this morning. Not a raise (unfortunately), but added job duties. Joy. I asked for a raise, I was politely giggled at.

I dunno, I'm seeing a "straight white male techie privilege" going on. Like, "why do you have anything you need to HIDE?!?!?!" Um, a million reasons, asshole. Many of which are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. And if you ask people to register with "the name their friends call them," then you are *not* asking for someone's "wallet name," as I'm seeing it called. Also, Google's privacy person posted publicly and explicitly in support of pseudonymity as a corporate policy in February of this year, using the Arab Spring protesters as an example. I can't find the link right now, read it at 3 am and I'm braindead but I'm sure someone can find it.

I really liked Denise (from DW) and Anil Dash's (from LJ) posts, which basically said: the problem with online incivility has more to do with the structure of the community and the tools for managing it than it does with the naming conventions. While the last thing Google wants to do is take on the responsibility for community management, they can do like everyone else does and give posters moderating ability.

I mean, I assume that if post to G+, I can moderate the responses, right?

I have always been called Ginger, because I'm named for my mother. I've had assorted go-rounds with banks because anyone who knows me, including my mother, writes checks to Ginger. A little common sense would say that Ginger Very-Rare-Last-Name and Virginia Very-Rare-Last-Name are the same person, but banks have never been known for common sense.

I can understand requiring that a person's real name is on file with an e-mail provider, in case of criminal activity, but in my view of the world, getting to that would require a subpoena.
