I'll speak up for Settlers of Catan, as well as its sister game Cities and Knights of Catan, which adds elements of Risk and Chess into the rules.

I've actually soured on Settlers a bit. A couple of bad experiences with people who took it way too seriously. It was quite the revolution in board games though.
If you like Settlers, I hear tell that the expansion, Cities and Knights of Catan, adds a lot to the game. I also like a spinoff, the standalone game Elasund. It loses the trading aspect, but keeps the die roll for resources deal, and has some other innovative ideas. Oh, and the robber gets replaced by pirates! (Yarr.) I played it with Emmett once, the pirates were a definite hit.
Oh man, my grandmother and great-aunt were vicious Pit players.
The group I used to hang with were addicted to Eurorails. I liked it. Learned a lot of European geography, too.
I always like Junta, but that could cause conflict as well. I guess that's to be expected in a game in which backstabbing and double-dealing is really the whole point.
Not sure how I feel about this:
SAVAGE TO SANTORUM: KEEP ATTACKING GAYS AND I’LL REDEFINE ‘RICK,’ TOO
Sex columnist Dan Savage has offered a new threat to Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum: If Santorum continues to attack gays and lesbians during his campaign, Savage will expand his “google problem” by redefining “Rick.” Savage led a campaign to redefine “Santorum” in 2003 after Santorum compared homosexuality to bestiality and pedophilia. Other people named Rick chimed in to urge Santorum to heed Savage’s threat. Watch it (Audio may be NSFW):
Uh oh. So glad my first name isn't shared by someone running for President.
Yeah. Santorum is a pretty obscure name, but Rick is not.
Also, I wonder if this would just be counterproductive.

This. The earlier stuff was brilliant, but continuing to push on it starts to feel like playground behavior.
People play Monopoly without auctions? This is weirder to me than the debate about the rules to Clue.
But yeah, as billytea said, it's a pretty terrible game with or without auctions.
the only thing that ever seemed to make it fun was cheating
Ah! You would be welcome to any game night with my family.
