I don't understand this part from the article, though:

There is? But then how are you supposed to ever wear OTHER jewelry, including other jewelry that other people give you, which (one assumes) falls under the "never take it off" dictum. I mean, not everyone can rock the Mr. T look.

If you are given a pair of earrings from your Great-Grandmother, you stick them in your head and never take them off.

But...what if I have another pair of earrings I want to wear? What if my great-grandmother gives me TWO pairs of earrings? That leads to "never take them off" implosion right there.

This "rule" I understand the most. Or, at least, I can understand how people would prefer to keep their wedding ring on at all times. I wouldn't, but I can see how some people would.

Then what if your great-grandmother leaves you a necklace instead of earrings? What if your husband gives you a pair of earrings for each of your 10 children? Do you have to get your ears pierced TEN TIMES to ensure that you wear them all forever and never take them off?

Utterly nonsensical. How do these ridiculous "traditions" get started?

(Relatedly, I just looked at my Celtic knot band ring -- in the open spaces of the weave -- and, yeah, it needs to be cleaned. It's not horrific, and I don't think it smells, but it could use a good scrub.
