I can walk down stairs without holding the handrail (if my hands are full), but I hate to do it and I walk a lot more carefully.

I *hate* walking down stairs if I can't see them - when I visited Notre Dame, the total darkness in the stairwell on the way down was by far the worst part of the climb.
