I was a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding (1981) and best woman in my male friend's wedding (1993). The dress I wore as a bridesmaid required almost no changes to double as a generic SF princess dress at mid-80s conventions. As best woman I wore a tux shirt and jacket over a black skirt. I liked the latter better.

Oh, thanks, smonster....
I have been a bridesmaid 4 times. Last October was the most recent and it was a lesbian wedding where all the attendants were "best friends" rather than bridesmaids or groomsmen.
I have one bridesmaid's dress that I wear a lot. It's a simple floor length black gown, with a scoop neck and short sleeves. Another one was a floor length navy blue with velvet top and satin skirt. I had that one cut to knee length and wore it a few times. I have another one make of a really pretty blue irridescent satin with spaghetti straps. One of the straps broke, though and I need to get it fixed. I haven't had occasion to wear it again, but I would.
Some people here need this shirt: [link]
That shirt would be even funnier in England.
I was in Oldest Brother's wedding (when I was three), and Middle Brother's first and second weddings, but not the third. (He eloped to Vegas for that one, because by then I think we were all kind of over it.) I've also been in two friends' weddings.
The only really hideous dress I had to wear was as the ring bearer for Middle Brother's first wedding. It was a yellow chiffon number that was a lot of look. Also I had to stand for the entire full (bilingual) Mass, and I was ten. Two-plus hours. ETERNAL.
I have just the hoop skirt, hat and parasol combo to fit you.
OMG msbelle, I am planning the same dream wedding!!! I used to tell all that could hear that I was having a Gone With the Wind Themed wedding with hoops and parasols and hats in the hopes that noone would ever ask me to stand in their wedding, thinking I'd reciprocate.
I am re-committing to just reading off my tbr shelves and using the library for a while.
This is me. But add forgetting to return library books on time and having to pay late fees. Buffista conversation #???.
I use the library a lot because I rarely know if I'll like a book enough to want to own it. (The criterion is: will I read it again?)
If need be, I can loan ita a hoop skirt, a hat, and a parasol. They'd all be black, is that okay?
ION, I just spent a bunch of time poking around Lookbook.nu, and I now feel confused and old. I know that I have Very Definite Views on fashion, but seriously? That is what passes for fashion? Why? Because most of the outfits look like the by-the-pound section of Goodwill attacked someone, but the person managed to escape from ONLY the pants.
I was a bridesmaid in my aunt's wedding in, like, 1985? Dark pink gown with shoes dyed to match, natch. Then I was a bridesmaid in my younger brother's wedding in 1995 with my sister-in-law's 7 sisters! The gown wasn't bad for a trad bridesmaid's dress but, sheesh, 8 ladies in the same dress is A. Lot. It was cranberry and a bunch of people were calling us the dancing berries. Including the bride. Who was hoping that she could be the last of her sisters who, due to family politics, had to have all the other sisters in the wedding. I don't think it worked, though, I know her next sister down had them all.
I was also in my friend's wedding in '96 and she just had us wear a black dress.
I told my committee that I have no bridely need for them to wear anything specific and they should just go with what would make them feel most beautiful and would be something they'd get some use out of. They decided on their own to match. They (and Bob's groomslady) are getting this:
In evening blue. I didn't go with them when they picked it but my friend who tried the sample said it looks way better on her curvy frame than it does on the model.
