I think the nuance is that slavery was not just about morality but about money. So the war was not necessarily because the great northern people wanted to rescue the poor enslaved black people, but also because of money.
But even then, the money in question was mostly property in the form of slaves and agricultural products produced with slave labor. There's really no way to study the Civil War with any degree of intellectual honesty and say with a straight face that "it wasn't about slavery."
[dang, I type slow]
I think the "not about slavery" thing came about as a simplification of the "not about morals", is what I am trying to say. That is, from personal experience, upstate NY schools in the 1980's taught about the Civil War as if every Northern Person was a completely non-racially prejudiced abolishionist on a crusade to free slaves. So it was a little shocking to realize there were other reasons that "it was wrong", at least to me personally. Sort of like discovering that White People coming to american wasn't all Indian Corn and Thanksgiving as it was taught to me.

WTFF?? It's NOT? But the Indians LOVED the Pilgrims and were THANKFUL they brought their domesticated animals and syphilis!!
Yeah, absolutely. If you think "it was about slavery" means "it was to free the slaves, because slavery is wrong" then you've got some truth to learn. That doesn't make it NOT about slavery.

The FUNNY syphillis.

Wasn't there also a bear?

Q: How many Pilgrims does it take to wipe out an entire indigenous race?
A: One!
BWahahahahahahahaha!
I do think there were other tensions that contributed a great deal to the North/South animosity - there's still a cultural divide between rural and urban areas today after 145 years of no-slavery farming, for instance. And I've seen plenty of people from the northern half of the country immediately write off someone upon hearing a Southern accent without waiting to see if what's actually said is ignorant or bigoted. But abolition was the issue that drove states to secede, and that's the one that is morally indefensible.
I think it must be the fact that it's 4:30 and I have deadlines and shit, but I'm now COMPLETELY OBSESSED with what the FUCK the vikings have to do with anything?? Because has anyone denied that they were in the Americas before Columbus? And why are they trying to build a mosque in my parents' neighborhood anyway? THEY'RE LUTHERANS!
