Happy anniversary!
Kat, I hope things go OK for your dad. "Your poor mom" is right -- I think that about my own mother all the time. When I'm not wanting to kill her...
Happy anniversary, Aims & Joe!
I am back at my desk after more than two weeks of vacation and I didn't know where to start digging in, and then I saw that Perkins needed a little help with something, so I ignored all the professors and the dean and sent her what she needed. Priorities!
IOW: Perkins, insent!
Lots of good thoughts to your family, Kat.
My alarm didn't go off this morning. It's a new clock radio with a lot of various settings, so there is a good chance I messed things up last night by pushing the wrong combo of buttons. Anyway was up by 7 and mac has now been picked up by grandma for 4 hours at their house while I work.
My boss is back on Thursday or Friday and I have still not done anything to get started on becoming a sole-proprietorship. I MUST do stuff today and have a rate ready to quote him so they can transfer me over to consultant next week.

Because you are AWESOME
(I was wondering about the timing, but figured you'd ignore me for a while if you needed to)
And because it needed its own post, -ma for your dad, and your mom, Kat.
my brain is already exploding trying to figure out self-employment tax.
I never did anything in particular to work as a consultant, just paid up at tax time...
This could be on-going though, plus my cousin is looking to have me set up a system and then do his invoicing and that could go on for years. It's just that most of what I am finding is about working only as a contractor and I will most-likely being doing it part-time as secondary income. You know what is not helpful, when sites say "to start estimating your tax payments, take your earnings from last year" and then give no example of what to do when it is your first year, when that is probably the year you'd be having the biggest issues.

On September 15, send in the taxes on the money you made on a 1099, based on your tax rate for your projected annual income. Do the same thing January 15 for your income through December 31. A home office deduction is not usually worth the trouble, even though it's not the red flag it used to be. Internet, office supplies and computer supplies can all be deducted.
Theoretically, you actually send in your projected taxes for the next four months, but since you have no history, it doesn't matter. I have been hit with underpayment penalties. If you have an unexpectedly good quarter, the government punishes you.
