However, I also have the "ad hoc Cooking at Home" book and that seems a little more up my alley, cooking-wise.
Ooh, I a copy just came to me today. Someone got it for me for my birthday. Exciting!

Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, pandas, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.

Can I cry now? A light showed up on my dashboard on Wednesday morning, so I took the car into the shop this morning. Just got the call.
Warning light was due to a oxygen sensor in the emissions system going out. Oil has to be changed. Brake light is out. Transmission fluid is overdue for a draining and refill. Cabin air filter is overdue for replacement. And the front brake pads are 80% worn. Getting all of that fixed is costing me $1200, and that doesn't include the new tires I'm going to need sooner rather than later. Civic is 4 1/2 years old, and this is the first thing I've had to do to it other than oil change and the time I had to replace a tire. At least I have the money in savings, for once, but it's going to deplete my account severely.
How many miles does your Civic have?
Just over 30,000, I think. I only put 10 miles on it during my commute, and I haven't taken too many long drives in it.
Check your maintenance schedule for the transmission fluid. I call bullshit for having to change out your transmission fluid yet on a Civic.
$1200 for that seems steep, too, but I'm no expert. A filter, oil/fluid change and new brake pads shouldn't cost that.

Yeah. For auto maintenance/fluids etc., go by your owner's manual, not what the dealer or other repair place says.
The transmission fluid is $140, the brake pad change includes rotors and fluid, and there's the original problem which is the oxygen sensor on the emissions system which includes a reprogramming of the software to tweak the cause of the sensor going out.
The oxygen sensor replacement I'm guessing about $300.
Brakepads maybe $250 - $300
Replace a brake light bulb dunno, I'd just do it myself. Maybe $10
Transmission Flush maybe $150 (which I don't think you need.)
Oil change $30
Cabin Air Filter maybe $20
Just guessing, but yeah, I agree with bon bon, I'd call around.
Massive Cross-Post.
