It's stopped snowing, and it's so beautiful. A couple-three inches of heavy snow on all the trees. I've lived in the south so long it's always a surprise to me now.
Thinking about this Univ. Alabama Hunstville case. Quite honestly instability is probably not much of a hurdle in attaining tenure - in fact I think in some ways academia fosters instability, or at least accommodates it in ways other walks of life don't. I mean, Hil's advisor's behavior would never be tolerated in a regular workplace. Of course, I'm speaking from a town where a tenured professor killed his estranged wife and two other people less than a year ago at a public event, and in retrospect, the man was looney tunes for ages. There's just such egotism in academia, even among the nice people. Being in a room with faculty is exhausting to me now. All this jockeying for power. And there's so little psychological separation between the self and the job.
Yes we know! North and South Korea are not marching together! There are some things they don't have to say over and over.
They have the full new We Are The World up here: [link] Some...odd choices. I would have done without both Original Michael Jackson and anyone singing through Autotune, personally.
I hope Autotune use dies out sometime soon and we can start hearing real singing again.
A freaky video - especially good at the highest resolution: [link]
This company developed a laser that can kill mosquitoes in flight. The video is of the laser "shooting down" the mosquitoes in close-up and slo-mo. In one video, the flying mosquito can suddenly be seen to smoke, then lose part of a wing and spin out of control as it continues to spew smoke - it's like a plane getting shot down in a war film.
The white puffy quilted skirts were an unfortunate choice.
My immediate reaction to the We Are the World video was that I missed Cyndi Lauper and Stevie Wonder. And that I was moved seeing Gladys Knight.
I rewatched the original, and man they have quite a group-- Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, and Harry Belafonte singing in the background.
The white puffy quilted skirts were an unfortunate choice.
Right? And the way they're making them sort of dance on the sideline is a little sad.

They remind me of weary go-go dancers.
What is that blue dress made of? It looks so space-age.
