I think the reason Parenthood good is because Jason Katims wrote for My So Called Life.
I like it so much more than I expected to. I loved the movie so much (Martha Plimpton: He said he loved me! Dianne Weist: That's what they all say, and then they come.) that I figured I would hate the show. But not the case.
It has a "Life Goes On" vibe I like, same as MSCL.
