Since I solved it, I've been thinking about my unconscious assumptions that initially prevented me from figuring it out. (Which is interesting to think about.)
Dammit, I couldn't get past the assumption that the first step would be to
weigh four on each side.
Me either, P.-C. Hardest part of getting rid of initial assumptions is seeing them!
It's annoying because for the second weigh, I understood the principle that
you can gain information by leaving balls out of the weigh, but I didn't think to apply that same logic to the first weigh, where I assumed that More Balls = More Information.
You have eight balls all of the same size 7 of them weigh the same, and one of them weighs slightly more. How can you find the ball that is heavier by using a balance and only two weighings?
That came to me instantly, which is unusual. Maybe I've heard it before.
I figured it out but want to read everyone's whitefont. How do I do that on an iPhone?

I know I've heard it or something like it before, but I forgot how it worked. The version I remember was with coins, though. I think it was here, even.
There's also a version where you know that one of the balls is either slightly heavier or slightly lighter, but you don't know which. I don't remember exactly how many balls and how many weighings you needed for that one.

If you're running the 3.0 software, you should be able to double-tap and highlight.
Best diaper ad EVAR. (Probably should only be watched by parents or daycare teachers.)
Thanks, Jess. I am running 3.0 but I seem to be only able to get the "copy" feature when I double click. And there is no text visible. I shall keep playing. Thanks for the help though.
