Ah, yes, of course. The gypsies, they gave you your soul. The gypsies are filthy people. Ptui! We shall speak of them no more.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I also keep in mind with surveys of high school students, that it's the prime age for sarcasm to authority figures, and filling out bogus anonymous answers to boring surveys is kind of fun....

You handle it with such grace and you are trying to find the best methods that work for you AND Mac. On one hand, yes that is just parenting and what one does, but on the other hand there are too many folks out there who shy away from that responsibility.

Well, you did sign up for -- and go through years and $$$ of effort -- to be a single mother. That didn't just "come up"!

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

but I just shake my head--I'm too selfish and set in my ways, and I know I wouldn't have the patience to deal with a child by myself.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Yeah, I'm responsible enough to know I'm not currently responsible enough to be anyone's mother. That's as far as that goes, especially solo.

Got into work only 15 minutes late. To a million emails, from yesterday.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

I know this is going to change any second now, but the most pressing thing I have to do at this point is my time sheets, and they aren't due until the end of the day tomorrow.

Weird.
