this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I just opened my cupboard and realized K bought "syrup" to replace our almost empty bottle of maple syrup.

Non-maple "syrup" is one of my shameful food loves. I was raised on Log Cabin and Mrs. Butterworth, so it tastes normal to me. Now that I have a brother in Vermont (mecca of real maple syrup), he supplies it to us on a regular basis. Still, when I have it, just for a minute, it doesn't taste "right."

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I always liked the fake stuff better as a kid. Like with my non-love of lobster, my family was happy to indulge my cheaper preference.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I missed that, Kathy, because Masterpiece keeps changing its name and TiVo didn't know. I'm pissed I missed Chiwetel.

My skin has gotten so sensitive. Now when I eat tomato sauce it burns my lips as if it had been spicy food. I even have a tiny rash on top of the scar from when I last split my lip. I have no idea what's up with that. Everything I cook with stings. Still tastes good though.

Because books.

I grew up with Log Cabin, too, and like Steph the real stuff always tastes weird to me at first. I actually buy the butter-lite stuff for myself now.

"I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret." Leigh Bardugo

But but but but....sputter!

She didn't even buy Log Cabin or Mrs. Butterworth (I loved MB when I was a kid, yet not over real maple).... She bought TROPICAL!

I love real maple. I grew up in a place where every winter the sugar shack would be open and we could buy maple sugar stirs which are heaven.

I also like margarine better than butter, because (again) it's what we ate when I was growing up, so it tastes "normal" to me. I invariably refer to it as "butter," which can cause people to point and mock.

Maple kinda gives me a headache. I can handle it in savory stuff (like an apple cider-maple-fivespice marinade for pork) but straight up maple? Newp.

When we were in Vermont this year, we had maple soft-serve ice cream. Oh. My. God. I honestly don't think I've ever had better ice cream in my LIFE.

I love maple syrup. When I was broke I went to Mrs. Butterworth instead and it was teh nast. Then I tried Ralph's brand, and it's lots better. When I get financially regularised, it's back to maple. Canada since I was little.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I like margarine better because 90% of my use for it is making toast or grilled-cheese sandwiches, and it doesn't tear up the bread like real butter does.
