A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

brillig

The 9 short was better story telling, but I liked the movie for its own sake.

Now tagless for your comfort.

I'll take Gladiator in tights. I like Robin grim.

Owen just gave me his first spoiler! We rented G-Force for the kids. They went with a friend to see it in the theatre, but wanted to see it again. When Speckle gets crushed in the garbage truck, Owen looked at me and said, "He's going to die in the garbage truck and then he becomes the bad guy!" So I checked the plot on Wikipedia and it does, in fact, reveal that the star-nosed mole is actually the evil mastermind behind the plot to destroy humanity. *sniff* I'm so proud.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

9 ! That was what I wanted to add to my queue, now that I have one.

I'm also catching up with Bolt which has me going "Puppy!"

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

My English teacher used to date one of the Runaways.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

io9 has a really terrific article up on race & SF (specifically Avatar): [link]

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

He will also take the “best” woman, the noblest, the highest born, the smartest, whose token resistance will dwindle its sorry way from faux-contempt to near-drooling adoration in a matter of days. Her former man will die, and her father will, too; her whole civilization will lie in ruins. She will pretty much get down on her knees to thank this white man, anyway.

Notice how nobody—not the Marines, not the brilliant scientist, not the wise blue natives—can make a single successful move without this white guy. They are all completely powerless and vulnerable until he comes along with his fake self-deprecation and his blunt, forceful manner and his great big muscles. Pathetic. I can’t believe more people aren’t all grossed out, here.

I was trying to recall just that, Jon. I think it was Sandy West. I have a vague memory of her referring to a "Sandy" but dang, it's been decades. And she understandably wanted to make sure that none of us students knew anything about it. I only know because my mom was good friends with many of the teachers, so she was over at our house one day and mentioned it.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I was going to bitch that The Book of Eli had flown entirely under my radar (I just bumped into the trailer doing my periodic Apple TV trailer review), but then I realised I've had pics of Denzel up on one of my sites from it since September. I just never knew where they'd come from.

So I'm back around to bitching. Have I just been skipping the ads on TiVo? The trailer totally looks like something I'd rewind for, Mila Kunis notwithstanding. Or is it flying close to the ground because it's supposed to be a turkey (I haven't seen much analysis of it, bar one site that called it Denzel's version of The Postman, which isn't good--but they sounded very amused with themselves)?
