Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

mostly I just felt bad for Naomi Watts having such a thankless role

That's kind of her thing, isn't it?

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Jennifer Jason Leigh in eXistenZ

I found it very difficult to tell if my extreme dislike of that one was JJL's fault or Cronenberg's. Either way, it was not my beautiful cake.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I really liked eXistenZ.

Or perhaps I just want to randomly scream, "eXistenZ is PAUSED!"

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

The last line of eXistenZ made me laugh like a drain in the theater when I first saw it.

It may have been the movie, Jess, because I thought that was the least affected acting I've seen from JJL in I can't remember how long (maybe The Big Picture). Though if it's JJL herself that sticks in your craw, than it might well have just been her.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I love JJL in The Big Picture. I bought the video just to have her student film.

Also love her in Miami Blues.

Miami Blues, yes. I liked her in The Hudsucker Proxy, but that wasn't exactly unaffected acting.

Because books.

What, no love for baby JJL in Fast Times?

Punishingly Intricate

I only have eyes for Phoebe Cates.

Years and years and years ago (I was an undergrad) some guy told me I looked like Phoebe Cates and I was, like, "Huh? From Lace & Lace II???"

For some reason, it didn't register with me that he was maybe thinking of her from Fast Times. Although, it's possible I hadn't seen it at that point either.
