Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

I recommended Days of Heaven to a colleague last week, and he just dropped in to tell me he watched it last night, and now it's his favorite movie ever. He said he kept forgetting that it wasn't archival footage from the turn of the last century. He also said that Terry Malick plays basketball every Thursday at a court not too far from his house, and he's considering taking up stalking the man. I could think of worse ways to spend your time.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

What a pleasure to be able to see Days of Heaven for the first time! I still remember walking out of the theater in a daze of cinematic bliss after my first viewing in college.

For work: If you had to come up with film directors from Francophone Africa (besides Sembène Ousmane), who would you be able to name?

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

I can't even name the one you spelled out for us.

I can't name the director, but the biopic about Patrice Lumumba from a couple years ago came to mind.

Sembène Ousmane is from Sénégal. He had quite the career until he died this year. He directed Moolaadé, that film about female "circumcision" that came out a few years ago.

I don't think I could name any African film directors, much less any Francophone ones. I could name writers, though! That counts for something, right?
