Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

"You're making out with your physically abusive clinically insane gay uncle and I should be happy for you? I...but...What? How? WHAT?"

bwah! A very reasonable response, and very likely how I'd have reacted if I'd seen it as an adult - but I was about ten, and crushing hugely on James Mason. Um. So - yeah. Um.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

Wow, finally sort of read that article on The [Lost] Tribe and what an unprofessional, gossipy ass! I don't care if any of it was true, you don't speak out of school like regarding your colleagues. "Everyone was so horrible and undedicated except for ME ME ME!". I say good for Jewel for getting the fuck away from that.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

"Odd Man Out"

Loved this, but I can bearly stand to watch it because it's so heartbreakingly sad.

"The Man Between"

I was a bit dissapointed in this. Mason was fine (as was Claire Bloom), but it seemed to be trying to hard to be another THIRD MAN.

The Wicked Lady. THAT is where it's at.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

Aye, Juliebird. It's Avatar Entertainment's first film, and I suspect last film, considering they went way over budget and nearly got sued. Jewel was ill during the shoot and it was a complete disaster anyway in terms of logistics (Jewel blogged about the director 'not being available' during the shoot). The fact they went back and reshot it in a place without electricity, to me, suggests they just did not have a clue what they were doing.

The sad thing is Jewel appears to be getting the blame for the mess it turned in to. Something tells me it wasn't her fault.

Punishingly Intricate

Seeing Juno again for the second time in a theater. I can't remember the last time I did that. Or even wanted to.

I saw it in the theatre twice too! Like 3 days apart. Partially because I'd promised a friend I'd go with her but I was really happy to be seeing it again and loved it more the second time.

"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

Sorry, lisah. I hadn't been in this thread all weekend.

I just posted a video of a drunken recount of the Burr/Hamilton thing starring Michael Cera.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

Note to JZ: I cried just as much, if not more.

But I thought it was better the second time too, if only because I knew nothing would happen between the husband and Juno. I was much less tense and could just enjoy all the great dialogue.

ION, I'm very happy to see Marion Cotillard win a Golden Globe as well as seeing a French movie take home best foreign film, even if it did beat out Persepolis.

Always Anti-fascist!

The James Mason conversation felt familiar, but I don't know that film. I guess it reminds me of my reaction to Al Swearingen though.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

megan, heh, that would definitely help the second time around.
