I am wondering now if the board shouldn't have a thread on the main page with your book title to try and channel the fans of the book. Those who want to join the board in full will find the Natter, etc.
A lot of people use a pseud to put up a barrier between work and internet. It seems a reasonable thing to do.
Anyone who went to the trouble could find out. If they acted like an ass hat on the board the board has means of dealing with it.
I wouldn't be adverse to limiting registration and making thread-viewing dependent upon registration for a short, set period of time post-book release. Didn't we do something like that before?
Did we actually do it? I can't remember. I think we decided that registering wasn't that much of a barrier.
At any rate, the amount of wankery following even Joss posting here has always been pretty minor, so I don't think random people will be a problem.
I worry about wankery hitting the board, too, and how to deal with that.
Fortunately there are pretty good systems in place here to deal with wankery.
As for the rest, well...it's a big event for you. And those should be kind of scary. I'm sure as the weeks go along and you will get used to the book being out there and getting used to whatever responses it generates and learn how to deal with those responses as they come up. It's a strange situation because the book--unlike a novel, say--does invite the reader into your real life and the lives of your friends (as you've portrayed them in the book) and to make judgements about them. But that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing or a thing that means you have to radically change the way you live your life online.
