Yay, brenda!!!!!!
I went to HS in the early-mid 80's and we had some out kids. I was friends with 2 gay guys and 1 lesbian. But, while the school was fairly mid & upper class WASPs, it was also fairly liberal (in the Denver suburbs).

I knew about people being gay n6th grade. but no one was out. Around the time iI graduated there were a few pink triangle on soe classroom doors. One of the teachers had a son that was gay, and she found some teachers that were willing to be havens for kids that needed to talk about their sexuality. Eventually, this became controversial - I think more because of politics - and the possibility that a political statement was being made.
ASAIK, we have no gay kids at school this year -- out, I mean -- but last year two of our graduating seniors were out. Seeing as we are a tiny urban school that serves alomost all minority students, this is fairly signifigant. I really have to fight a constant battle with using "gay" as a slur. From what I've seen, it seems like the immigrant Latino community is one of the more homophobic ones.
I wish I had a Buffalo chicken salad right now.
When I was at school, I don't think it was ever an issue somebody being gay, as far as I recall anyway. Not from my point of view and not gossiped or mentioned by other people, either.
I'm always a little shocked -- and frankly pissed -- when I use Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming service. Whenever I hear a US person, they're calling somebody a fag, and such. That's pretty alien to me, and I do wonder how ingrained that is in American high school culture and attitute.
I don't think law school adquately prepared me to spend a beautiful Saturday afternoon reading papers presented at a 1978 American Welding Society convention. I want my money back.
Huh. I have leftover Popeye's Chicken in the fridge downstairs. I think I'll go do something about that....
I haven't seen that ad, Jesse.
There was plenty of gay in my high schools.
wish I had a Buffalo chicken salad right now.
ME TOO!
I'm having a goodish day after a bummer night. But a Buffalo Chicken Salad would make things even better!
