Maybe it's because in the times I've had to negotiate pay, I've never been able to negotiate from a position of strength.
Yeah. My husband had to remind me that I am actually negotiating from a position of strength. I have nearly ten years of experience doing this, my current earnings are completely in line with what salary surveys I can find, and if they can't pay me what I'm worth, I can stick with contract work.
But it's still icky. It'll probably be one of those situation where I psych myself up about it and salary doesn't even come up today.

No, I'm working for The Man now (editing French and Italian textbooks).
Just winging it on the Italian?
but would "slingshot" around the moon to head back to Earth.
Y'know, I'ma learn from John Crichton's mistake and just take a pass on this one.
We've had the whole first name issue. It's hard because it's easy to give the smackdown to students who are rude, but it's tricky when the student means well, or you've developed a relationship with the student.
I'm having trouble with this with my advisor. He closes all of his emails to me with his first name. However, everyone in the department refers to him as Dr. Lastname. I've been using Dr. Lastname but it feels weird when he is referring to himself as Firstname. Sometimes etiquette is hard!
I think that this could be an easy one. You can take your clue from him. If he signs with his first name, that's what he wants to be called. But, if you're uncomfortable, always go with the most formal form of address. Or, you can ask him what he likes to be called.

Hey! I studied Italian.
Fifteen years ago.
What?
I think I should stop and eat lunch before I start smashing shit.
I have a weird relationship with a former grad school professor, in that I can't figure out what to call her! Definitely first name, but then I'm not sure if I'm OKed to use her nickname or not. And she signs emails with just the first letter. In practice, I don't call her anything.
It could be that they just don't know how to speak/write, but sometimes they just seem so huffy about have to actually explain themselves.
Not just in academia! My minion randomly got a call from someone at an affiliated organization, looking for a coworker here. A coworker in a different department, whose office is relatively far away. The annoying caller insisted that my minion try to figure out why she didn't pick up the phone. Is she in her office? Is she in the office at all today? DUDE. We have no idea!! Leave a freaking message, and wait for a call back!
