Could just be a hoax, though. I fake some headaches, everyone gets used to poor helpless Spike. Then one day, no warning, I snap a spine, bend a head back, drain 'em dry. Brilliant.

Ah, the poetry posting. t /natter

Okay, didn't actually stop in here to chat, but to point out that the board seems to be loading horribly slow for me this morning.

Howdy all!

There's a proposition on the table that I wanted to run by you. IH would like to move all the current Mercedes inhabitants to a brand spanking new server. Here's what the boys have to say:

These replacement servers will all be dual xeon servers with 2gb ram compared to a single p3 (mercedes) with 1gb ram. We would handle all the moving of the sites, databases, etc. Clients would not have to do anything, as we would do everything on the backend. Nothing will change on your end, as all paths will be the same as they are now, the same modules will be installed, etc.

There would not be any downtime associated with these potential moves. We would keep these older servers up for a while after the moves are done, in order to be on the safe side.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Personally, I'm leaning towards shiny new server since Mercedes has gotten a wee bit tempermental of late. But I wanted to throw it out there to you before I respond.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

So you're saying nothing changes but our performance improves and I don't have to do any work?

I kinda pro it, myself.

Yeah, I'm looking hard to find a downside.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

Would that my life were so downside-free.

Thanks for all the fish.

Yeah, I'm looking hard to find a downside.

More time on the fast new board, less time for real life?

Okay, yeah, I'm grasping.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Sounds good to me.

What are we missing?

Kristen - it does not sound bad to me.

I have my doubts on the "no down time" thing. In this business you should never *promise* "no down time". Probably there will be no down time. but there alwys is some risk. What it sounds like they can promise is no data loss.

I totally think it worth the small risk of down time. But as someone who has been in this business a long time, avoid this kind of promise.

Rule of thumb:

Promise to get it done in three weeks. Finish in four. You are a zero. Promisie to get itdone in six weeks. Finish in five. You are a hero.
