Regarding the intermittent outages:
Our IT people can't find traces of the outages in their bandwidth logs. They did reboot the server once yesterday, but other than that, they don't see signs of the server being down.
They did suggest a course of action to help trace the outages; I'm forwarding the full text of their reply to my query to ita.
Monique, I noticed that the mail server for buffistas.org was getting a host not found error during the outages, too, and I've been getting the same error from the mail server intermittently for several days now. The other times it's happened I've usually been able to retry and get through.
Is anyone still stunned that we have a hosting company that actually talks to us?
Not only do they talk to us, but they talk to us like we're customers rather than some irritant taking up their time and server space.
<webhost mode>Clearly, these problems are your own doing. We can't explain how or why or what's really going on but if you give us a kajillion more dollars, I just know that we can make all your problems go away for 6-8 weeks. Probably.</webhost mode>
Hmmm...I don't think that tone was quite right. I should've misspelled some words.
I've been getting the same error from the mail server intermittently for several days now
How/where are you checking your mail? You can post it here or just e me at support AT fangeek.com.
You also gave a definate time period. Tsk tsk.
It should be " if you give us a kajillion more dolars, we might make all your problems go away until your screw up agan."
On Edit: Yo! HR. I'm looking for a job, and as you can see I have mad webhost skillz! I know nothing about servers or hosting. Should work out bu-ti-fally.
Still not quite right. Should be:
Dear customer,
The problem is the bubblecornfish smelly bum tea cozy. Pine cone keebler elf.
Pay us 500 more dollars so I can buy more Playstation games and get my mom a new dishwasher so she stops barging into my room to tell me to clean my underwear off of the floor.
How/where are you checking your mail?
I've had the same problem as DX. I check the mail using the IMAP protocol via Eudora.
I've been checking my account and the filk account using POP3 via Pocomail, and the admin box using IMAP via Mozilla. As I said it's intermittent, and usually connects on a retry. The only times it hasn't are when the board's been AWOL, too.
Happened again. It was fine ten minutes later when the mail program tried again. Here are the messages I get:
Checking mail for Buffistas (07/21/2003 9:18:25 PM)...
