A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Also -- about the front page -- it also hits the database (to get the list of threads). It's not clear to me that that's any less resource intensive than grabbing ten posts from a specific thread (i.e. what linking directly to a post does).

Thanks for all the fish.

I've got a question. When I hit a thread I see 50 posts, because that's how I have my preferences set (I am usually catching up). When someone who isn't registered checks a thread how many posts do they see? And does the number of posts per page have an effect on resources?

ten.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

The default is ten posts per page.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

And does the number of posts per page have an effect on resources?

Yes -- the more pages displayed at once, the harder the hit. However, if the person wanted to view 20 posts, it'd be less intensive to see them all at once, rather than two page loads.

Thanks for all the fish.

So by having my preference set at 50 posts per page I'm not taxing the system more than I would be if I had it at 10?

(edited to indicate that English is, in fact, my first language.)

Nobody

a) What Elena said. I have mine set at 30, because I thought it would be more helpful, but will set it at any number I'm told to - because I'm just that kind of girl.

Generally, when some outside place links to a VIP quote, they've already quoted the VIP. People who follow the link will want to read the posts around it for context. If we set up a special page with the VIP quote, most folks will still poke around trying to find the discussion from which it arose. That ends up using more resources, not less. Leaving things as they are may well be the most efficient way of dealing with this.

Yes, what Jon said. Also? What those-who-are-VIP-hounds want, is to be *noticed* by Joss (Tim, the Beagle, Whomever) - so they want to post where J/T/tB/W posted, so that their brilliance, humor, sex appeal, will be apparent, and, based on one post, timed just right - they will Be. Big. Star.

I don't mean to imply that most folks who follow a link to a VIP post are VIP hounds. Most are regular fans who want to sip from the grail. There's just this starfcker contingent...

If you plan to read all 50 posts, then it's less taxing to bring them up all on one page, rather than on several separate pages.

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

Whew! I've logged in maybe eight times in the last half-hour, and every time I clicked on one of my subs, I was "in guest mode," with no posting box. Is it all better now? Was it my computer or did the board have a hiccup?

Nope. I hit "post" and when the post came up I was back in "guest mode." I right-clicked and "back" to edit my post.

Whazzit?
