Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

I was going to suggest Willie for the harp. I'm positive there's a Spoon song with a harmonica solo, too, but I can't think of which one, offhand.

OK, I am putting up my Christmas mix on BR. I was going to call the whole thing "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out," but then this title occurred:

Stuffing Stockers 2006

01 Thanksgiving - George Winston
02 Emmanuel - William Ackerman
03 Near Northern - Turtle Island String Quartet
04 Lord of the Dance - Christmas Revels
05 Gaudete - Mediaeval Baebes
06 Dona Nobis Pacem - Richard Stoltzman
07 Salva Nos - Mediaeval Baebes
08 Lullaby - Nox Arcana
09 Sugar Rum Cherry - Duke Ellington
10 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - BNL/Sarah MacLaughlin
11 Christmas - Blues Traveler
12 Merry Xmas from the Family - Jill Sobule
13 So This Is Christmas - Acceptance
14 Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Death Cab for Cutie
15 You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
16 Santa Baby - Rev Run & the Christmas All-Stars
17 Oi to the World - No Doubt
18 The Christians and the Pagans - Dar Williams
19 Christmas Night of Zombies - MxPx
20 Es Y'golonac - The Arkham Carolers
21 Feast of Lights - TMBG
22 Bizarre Christmas Incident - Ben Folds
23 It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Fish-Men - The Arkham Carolers
24 Dig That Crazy Santa Claus - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
25 Yule Shoot Your Eye Out - Fall Out Boy
26 Christmas at Ground Zero - Weird Al

It starts out quiet and reflective and winterice, and gets progressively weirder funkier angrier funnier. Tracks 20 and 23 are probably best appreciated by Lovecraft fans.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I've had a chance to listen to more of Santasia (the Xmas mashup project I linked to) and some of it is choice -- I particularly am fond of "Give da Jew Girl Toys" (yes, there are a couple Hanukah-themed mashups in the set).

Off to download!

Hec, I have about 5 "Carol of the Bells" but none are great. I posted the best choral one to PR.

Be sure to grab the uncensored version! You should also grab last year's collection. He's got it set up as a torrent that didn't take very long to download. [link]

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Heh. I love this exchange between Daniel Handler and Stephin Merritt.

************

Handler: What other songs do you get in your head?
Merritt: There are two things that I always, for decades, have gotten stuck in my head while walking down the street. One of them is a beautiful song by the Red Krayola, "Plekhanov:" "Neither anticipation / nor fulfillment / is realistic / in dialectic / Who's learned the language of the Internationale? / Our conversation / for seventeen years / has volunteered / Plekhanov / a priori / Who's learned the language of the Internationale? / Who was ever disowned by his Granma?"

Handler: What's the other song?
Merritt: The jingle for Bumble Bee tuna: "Yum, yum Bumble Bee / Bumble Bee tuna / I love Bumble Bee / Bumble Bee tuna..."

Handler: I always get "Dude Looks Like A Lady" stuck in my head.
Merritt: I love that song.

That's awesome. I was watching the six-hour documentary on VH1 last night about Heavy Metal and the saddest part was watching That Dude from Warrant talk about how his record label said they wouldn't release their album without a "Dude Looks Like A Lady" type track. (Which, hello? Pretty damn hard.) So he wrote "Cherry Pie." Looking fat, miserable, balding and bloated he said, totally seriously, "There are about a thousand times I wish I had the balls to shoot myself in the head for writing "Cherry Pie." I can't go anywhere, ever without being the Cherry Pie Guy."

I felt kind of bad for him.

Request for everyone: What are your favorite songs that incorporate hand claps?

A few obvious ones: Jack and Diane, Rock the Casbah

A bit less obvious: Close to Me, Alex Chilton

Any others?

The Decemberists have been using handclaps when they play "O Valencia" live.
