Sufjan Stevens has a Christmas record out. It collects the five eps of Christmas music he's done over the years for distribution to his friends and family. Favorite title? "Get Behind Me, Santa!"
Also there's a movie about the Danielson Family coming out, which will have a fair amount of Sufjan in it.
I spent my money on
Orphans.
You would never peg the lead track, "Lie to Me," as a Tom Waits song. It's freakin' rockabilly! And he sings it in his upper register with a minimum of phlegm.
The early stuff isn't my favorite, but a lot of it is still great and I thought I'd share this live (and downloadable) concert of Tom Waits from 1975.
Sound quality is excellent. Mostly material from the first two albums and a couple tracks that would wind up on Nighthawks.
Tom Waits in the house on THE DAILY SHOW tonight, FYI!!!!

Yeah, he was great on Letterman last night. I think that was Duke Robillard on guitar.
Btw, The Decembrists on Letterman tonight.
Not generally a topic here, but I just picked up a CD of music for children called "Colours Are Brighter." It's great! Tracks by Belle and Sebastian, The Flaming Lips, The Kooks, Franz Ferdinand, and Rasputina, amoung others.
The "Pooh Trilogy" of Pooh's songs set to music may be the most adorable thing in ever.
Since I can't stand listening to most kids' albums, I thought I would pass on the rec.
(I also just got An Even Scarier Solstice, the follow-up album to the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's first holiday album, but I recognize this to be a niche recording)
This weekend's NYTimes had an interesting kids'-music-for-hip-adults-that-don't-like-traditional-kids-music article:

Also, I am enjoying your mix, Nicklas. The track I cannot get enough of is the last one - the William Elliott Whitmore one. I love it and will probably steal it for my own year-end mix.
A kids' album that has Rasputina on it?! Oh dear, I sense a purchase in my future ...
Appeal to the hivemind:
Just watched an old episode of Scrubs, the one about the odds of someone dying in a hospital being one in three and all of their patients end up dying, and the end musical montage had a male singer who sounded a lot like Springsteen doing a song about dying. There is what seems to be a chorus of "Hallelujah" to the song. Is it Springsteen? Does anyone recognize it? I've tried Google with no love.
I don't watch Scrubs, but the song is probably one of the numerous covers of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," none of which have been done by the Boss. It could be Cohen, or Rufus Wainwright, or Jeff Buckley, or John Cale.
And upon further research, it's Cale. [link]
I'm just amazed that connie has only til now managed to avoid one of the umpteenth million montages done to one of the versions of "Hallelujah"
I swear there was a period there that you couldn't swing a dead cat at your TV without hitting one.
