Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

Nice Slate article on Joanna Newsom's new album.

It's funny you should mention it, because I just ran into a friend this afternoon who was listening to this on her iPod, and I had never heard of her.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

Like Jon and a few other people here (I remember that Tina put one of her songs on a mix), I liked The Milk-Eyed Mender, too, but it took me a little while to get past that voice.

Not this Tina, CI. (Edit: Btw,nice Hight Hat, dude!) I have never been able to get past her voice despite all the uber-hipsters at my Lawrence record store being giddy as school girls about her.

I am working on my Top Ten of 06.

Here is what I've got so far.

1. the hold steady • boys and girls in america
2. the decemberists • the crane wife
3. the thermals • the body, the blood, the machine
4. yo la tengo • i am not afraid of you and i will beat your ass
5. drakkar sauna • jabraham lincoln
6. tapes n tapes • the loon (this was released in 05 and re-released in 06)
7. cold war kids • robbers and cowards
8. tv on the radio • return to cookie mountain
9. calexico - garden ruin
10. belle and sebastian • the life pursuit

might still make the cut:
built to spill • you in reverse
richard buckner • meadow
m. ward • post-war
kind of like spitting • the thrill of the hunt
destroyer • destroyer's rubies
arctic monkeys • whatever people say i am, that's what i am not
bruce • we shall overcome: seeger sessions

meh:
bobby bare jr. • the longest meow
mountain goats • get lonely (much as it pains me to say it)
justin timberlake • futuresex/lovesounds (somebody break that guy's heart again!)

I feel like I am forgetting something big....

Wow! I haven't even started a list yet.

Not this Tina, CI.

I could have sworn it was you. Between this and me mistaking a Boucher comment for a buddha one on another thread, this is officially my week to get imaginary friends confused.

(Edit: Btw,nice Hight Hat, dude!)

Thanks! You should submit something to our next issue.

And, by the by, since we haven't seen much of you lately, how's things going?

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Have you guys heard of Juana Molina?

I have! She's coming through here soon. I keep meaning to check out her music more, though.

m. ward • post-war

Definitely in my top ten. Definitely. It's such a freaking good album.

justin timberlake • futuresex/lovesounds (somebody break that guy's heart again!)

No. Kidding.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Oh, shit. Ruth Brown died.

Major R&B vocalist in the 40s and 50s for Atlantic. Many great songs, but my favorite is "Wild Wild Young Men." Huge pipes, tons of sass.

She played Motormouth in the original Hairspray.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

AMG reviews Tom Waits' new box set of rarities. Rave review. Mojo gave it 5 stars too.

Dang, I'll never get an interview with him now.

"Either it's murder, or this library has a very strict overdue policy."

Tina: I too started on that top ten of 06 thingamabob -- I mean, nothing new I might hear from now till new years will have enough impact. However, the list grew a bit. So mine turned out to be a top 33, mainly because if I tried to make it shorter I will feel bad for not mention the others. Still not entirely sure of all the positions though.

Typical Day in Tina's Life
Work 10 hours
Bar/Gym (depending on which I did the day before)
Sleep

Weekends
Sleep

So, my life is boring and repetitive but not bad by any means. I am so busy at work I never see the internets at all - so I miss out on lots of buffista wittiness.

Definitely in my top ten. Definitely. It's such a freaking good album.

SA, Have you heard his other albums? I think the reason I am having trouble putting it in my Top 10 is because I am comparing it to Transistor Radio and Transfiguration of Vincent, which are still better albums in my opinion. But it is a great album.

So mine turned out to be a top 33

Post that sucker. I am excited to see it.

On edit:

Last night I heard the new Jay-Z (official release is 11/21). A lot of it is much better than the single out now would lead you to believe, and some of it is much, much worse (the duet with Beyonce - blech). Nicely done song about Katrina ("Yeah I gave a mil/But I didn't give my time/So in reality I didn't give a dime"). Not his best - not even better than the black album - but very good in parts.
