Hello, Musicistas! I have been consigned to lurkage through the magic of threadsuck the last week or so. Luckily, auditioning cuts for the Buffistamix is much more low-profile work-wise than merrily posting here. I think I have mine finalized and am working on liner notes.
Corwood, I would like to throw my name into any mix slacker list you may be considering.
Kate, you were a big help in finalizing my mix! "Who Is He And What Is He To You" was a strong finalist for the bassline category, and now I can indulge myself with a cut from a local band. Plus, everyone still gets to hear that sexay song. Also, your comment about mandolins cemented my choice for the non-guitar cut. It was too tough until then - I have so many non-guitar, non piano things to choose from.
Tina, sadly, it is not all-Winfield, all the time. But I've got a few campground recordings on there. Whee!
DX, just when I think it's not possible to love you any more, you go and add Benny Goodman to the mix. As soon as I read the song title, I was hearing the drums in my head. Made me think of my Dad - he would put a stack of Benny and Glenn and Fats on the turntable to do dishes by - I can't hear those drums without seeing him at the sink, snapping his fingers with the soapsuds flying.
t mwah!
and that's a tag that just won't seem to close
I have to confess I am really close to putting together a track list, if not an actual mix, of cheesy R&B songs in all the mix categories.

I want to see this!
Now Playing: The Bunch. This is a Fairport side project from the early 70s. Sandy Denny and Linda Thompson (then Linda Peters) duetting on "When Will I Be Loved"? Bliss.
One of my all-time favorite records was Fairport Chronicle a two-LP collection of their work put together with the loving care of the truly obsessed. Best single band overview ever. But it's never been released on CD (or if so, only briefly in Japan). But I think I now have the necessary tracks to recreate the whole thing. If I do, I'll post it and you can listen to one of the soundtracks of Teen Hec's college days.
iTunes is playing the "Dead Skunk" song on my work computer right now. It matches my mood perfectly.
Jesse: do it do it do it. If you don't have the technology we'll talk. :-)
Um, could I ask a musically naive question? What is a bassline, or rather, how do I determine what is is?
Some songs that I'm trying to determine if they are or not:
- Let's Go (Pony), the Routers
- (Ghost) Riders in the Sky
- Twine Time, Alvin Cash & the Registers
- Radio Rhythm, Fletcher Henderson
- Beat Girl, John Barry
- Theme from The Apartment, Tito Rodriguez
- Hey! Bo-Diddley, Bo Diddley
- Soul Finger
- Mr. Lee, The Bobbettes
- Optical Sound
Here is a handy YSI file if you need to listen to them rather than rely on memory (if you know them):

[adding -- it's whether the song qualifies as starting with a bassline that I'm interested in! But I may be mistaken about what the quality I'm looking for IS.]
Theo, any song where the first thing you hear is the bass would be eligible. An obvious example would be "You Can't Hurry Love" by The Supremes with that throbbing bass hook by James Jamerson. Or "Peter Gunn." "Bust A Move" by Young MC starts with the bass (by Flea).
God I love "Bust a Move." And Flea in the video wearing teddy bear pants.
Yeah, that would be easy. But do we mean bassline that can be carried only by basses? Should it be playing solo? What if it's really a rhythm guitar (which I've always assumed is "bassline played by a regular guitar")?
::frets::
Hmm, think anyone around here might be interested in this? One of these days "You're on a first name basis with lucidity, little friend, I have to call it Mr. Lucidity, and that's no good in a pinch," will become my tagline, but today is not that day. (The sound quality of the clips improves after the first few.)

Buffistarawk? Linda really loves the Everlys. Most of the R< bootlegs I have feature at least one cover.

One of my goals is to get my turntable & records out of storage. If I do I'll rip Fairport Chronicles & send you a copy. Is "Learning the Game" from The Bunch? How's the RT box set "Sloth," Corwood?
