Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Huh. Crime index 41.8 for where I grew up. Neat.

Also, their temperature things seem a bit screwy. At least, it sure seems like the average high for July ought to be higher than 85. Maybe it's just that a few 100+ degree days crowd out the less-hot days in my memories.

Coding and Sleeping

654 murders (17.1 per 100,000)

Topeka beat that in 2001 (17.9 per 100,000).

Topeka decimated LA's rape rate. (68.5 per 100,000).

You can tell your mom that LA is safer than Topeka, KS.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

It's fascinating comparing the stats for Chevy Chase (where I grew up) to DC (2 blocks from where I grew up).

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

The thing about murder rates is, I really only want to know the number of people who got killed by strangers. It's easy for me to convince myself that no one I know would kill me.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

It's easy for me to convince myself that no one I know would kill me.

I don't know -- when wee fists of rage get going ...

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Awww, these housing figures are from 2000. They are like wee little tiny numbers compared to median costs now. Like wee little numbers that were divided by two or three. t weeps

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

The town where I spent my early childhood, Orinda, is 84.4% white, has a bare handful of Chinese and Japanese Americans, a smattering of other Asian ethnicities, and no Black people at all. Median income is $117,000/year. 97.8% have graduated high school, 73.9% college, and 34.3% beyond.

The town where I spent the rest of my childhood, Walnut Creek, is 80% white, 6% Hispanic, 1.1% Black (the site notes that this is significantly (their emphasis) below the state average), and a tiny tiny hint of everyone else. Median income $63,000. 95% of the folks have HS degrees, 54% bachelor's, 20% beyond.

San Francisco is 43.6% white and contains a sizeable chunk of just about everyone else, with Irish being the single largest ancestry for white folks. Median income as of 2000 was $55,000. 81% of us finished high school, 45% college, and 16.4% something above and beyond.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

For Belmont in 2002:

0 murders (0.0 per 100,000)
10 rapes (38.4 per 100,000)
10 robberies (38.4 per 100,000)
70 assaults (268.8 per 100,000)
199 burglaries (764.0 per 100,000)
224 larceny counts (860.0 per 100,000)
40 auto thefts (153.6 per 100,000)
City-data.com crime index = 187.4 (higher means more crime, US average = 330.6)

(and that is an increase from 2001)

I think this is my favorite so far:
Mean travel time to work: 27.1 minutes

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

LA:

654 murders (17.1 per 100,000)

1,415 rapes (36.9 per 100,000)

Pretty sure Milwaukee beats that easily.

ETA: 111 murders (18.3 per 100,000); 326 rapes (53.8 per 100,000)

It's easy for me to convince myself that no one I know would kill me.

Or at any rate, that I deserved it.
