still obsessing about NYC... thank you for all the pointers! Looking at craigslist, (the place msbelle linked to has a 5 night minimum) how does the location of this place look?

I very much appreciate your help with this. It is quite shameful how little I know about NYC.
Nora, a friend of mine stayed in a hotel in NY with a shared bath that sounds like the one you mentioned. She said it was very clean (and believe me, she would notice any bit of dirt). I just sent her an email to ask her the name of the place she stayed.
When can you get here?
Well, I have to go to the gym first, and then work ...
shared baths- oddly not so much a squick for me, as long as they're clean. So, thanks, Sue!
My hope is if I find someplace cheap and decent then I can afford more trips to the city and start to conquer my ignorance... and hang out with more NYCistas...
I think I have my shared bath phobia largely because I'm an only child like that. I never went to Disney World. My father was self-employed, so we never had a lot of extra money. And my parents were older (for that day) so I never (sadly) got to rule the roost. Most of my only child issues come out in situations involving solitude (NEED!), noise (HATE), privacy (LIKE OXYGEN), and personal bubble (a cubic yard would be nice, thanks).
Um, Nora, I bet you could find a free room in NYC if you tried really hard.
Hotel 17 is the place my friend stayed:

These were her comments:
It's where Manhattan Murder Mystery was filmed. It was GREAT! Shared bathroom but TOTALLY spotless all the time, large, and never a problem to get it!

You and me both, baby -- and I'm not an Only; just the oldest.
And let me tell you, spending 5 days trapped with my family in another state, given that my parents don't understand the concept of boundaries, was really really really too much.
I did, quite seriously, drink A LOT to deal with it. It was the only way to get me mellow enough to not start screaming "LEAVE ME ALONE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, LEAVE ME ALOOOOOOOONE!!!"
I'm always afraid cheap = nasty, which is especially true in NYC, I think, so that's why I'm most wary of shared bathrooms. First-hand recommendations are a good thing.
