Buffista Movies 4: Straight to Video

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

I have never been able to stay awake for 2001 on the small screen. I think I might add Barry Lyndon to the list of movies that will be big screen only.

Somehow, I made it through Solaris on DVD, though.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

How much puppet sex do you have to compare it to?

Between Farscape and Meet the Feebles? Um...more than you'd think.

Objectively, I think I'd have to say that Barry Lyndon is a better film than 2001. Or, well...I keep wanting to say that it's less experimental, but that's not quite true. The risks it takes are subtler, and because all of them pay off, they're harder to see. 2001 is more overtly daring, and so large parts of it don't work as well as they should. But it grabs me harder on an emotional level. Maybe.

(It's really hard for me to compare them, because I love and admire them both so much on such completely different levels.)

I guess that's probably more true for me than my statement about preferring 2001. It's an ask-me-tomorrow-get-a-different-answer situation.

Now tagless for your comfort.

Jessica is me.

Hey. New board.

I like 2001.

Because the music is pretty.

Hate the story. Hate the book. Like the monkeys.

Mad Hot Ballroom is SO FREAKING ADORABLE and everyone must go and see it RIGHT NOW. So cute. OMG.

(And definitely stay through the credits, because there are some extra bits of interviews, one of which is going to have me laughing for the rest of my life.)

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Every actor that is good is in 13 Moons.

If that list doesn't include Cate Blanchett than I fear your credibility is in jeopardy, you cranky ol' weremonkey.

Jessica, my coworker saw Mad Hot Ballroom and also loved it.

I got to meet Vonnie last night! She's all cool and Vonnie-esque and (as is the way with the Buffistas) very attractive.

Like I had any credibility left.

13 Moons is better than you would expect from the various synopses that are out there.

Cate Blanchett is not in it.

Weremonkeys are grouchy. Lean into it.
