The comic book was a nice detail. I have a feeling there are other details to be found on rewatch.

I have no real idea, but I suspect that since the Others look a lot like pirates, maybe the Island isn't quite as 100% mystical as it seemed. IOW, I think maybe Locke was caught in some sort of chain.
